Our History

Taranaki Medlab is located at 79 Vivian Street, New Plymouth.

The Laboratory was established in 1962 by Dr Dennis Allen as an independent medical testing laboratory to serve the people of North Taranaki. Dr Bert White joined Dr Allen as a partner in March 1987. The name was changed to Taranaki Medlab Limited in April 1992.

Its role was expanded to include the Central Taranaki region in 1993 and South Taranaki in 1994.

Dr James B. Hunt (Pathologist) joined the Company 15 February 1993 and became a partner 1 April 1995 and Dr David Innes (Pathologist) joined the Company 24 June 1996 and became a partner 1 April 2000. Dr Gerard McCarthy (Pathologist) joined the Company 10 April 2003.

The laboratory at 79 Vivian Street, New Plymouth was substantially renovated and extended in 1999.  

The Histology/Cytology Department was relocated to the basement of the Vivian Medical Centre, 56 Vivian Street, New Plymouth in 1993.

From September 2003 Taranaki Medlab has provided all anatomical pathology service for the Taranaki District Health Board.

In 2018 Taranaki Medlab Limited became Taranaki Medlab Limited Partnership, a company owned by Sonic Healthcare, Dr James Hunt and Dr David Innes.  The laboratory is managed by Medlab Central.

Taranaki Medlab provides a full range of pathology testing services and the great majority of its work comes as a result of test requests issued to patients by general medical practitioners. Other requestors include hospital practitioners for outpatients and industrial requestors.

Samples and specimens are taken from patients at the laboratory and test results are returned direct to the patient's doctor. It also provides a phlebotomy service to Rest Homes and private homes.

A courier collects specimens from and delivers results to Medical Centres and Hospitals.
